Race to Replace Balboni Begins

NY Times The Empire Zone

Now that State Senator Michael A.L. Balboni, a Nassau County Republican, has joined the Spitzer administration, Republicans are wasting no time trying to hold on to his seat.
Tomorrow Maureen O’Connell plans to throw her hat in the ring. This press release has just come in: “Maureen O’Connell will announce her candidacy for New York State Senate and will also call upon the Governor to not delay his announcement of a date for a Special Election so that the residents of the 7th Senate District will again have
a voice in the State Senate. Maureen O’Connell, a Registered Nurse and Attorney, is currently Nassau County Clerk, a former NYS Assemblywoman, and a former East Williston Village Trustee.'’
One possible Democratic challenger, Craig Johnson, a Nassau County legislator, was in Albany this week at the state of the state.
Of course, no date has been set for the special election yet.

And speaking of replacements...........Newsday's Spin Cycle...for the umpteen time continues to tell us Assembly Gets Its Back Up On Hevesi Replacement ---and Azi Paybarah(The Politicker) gives us more arguments on who should select Hevesi's replacement Albany's Lofty Standards If DiNapoli eventually gets the nod...there would be 2 special elections for Spitzer to call..both in Nassau County....andy
