Winners and losers of the race .......Newsday sums it up pretty well....the winners.....Eliot Spitzer...gambled his power and prestige and won.......Tom Suozzi....who is earning the title of "team player"...........Jay Jacobs....for directing Johnson's campaign at the local level which worked very well with the state organization.......DAN CANTOR (Working Families Party state chairman)...his organization was all over the place and in the Republicans face most of the campaign...and my own pick as a winner...Maureen O'Connell for keeping the job she has always wanted..and not winning the job..she never really desired.....and now the losers......Joe Mondello/Nassau Republican Machine....failing to deliver the republican goods in his own backyard....Joe Bruno...for picking Mondello to run this campaign.....and losing another rep in the senate.......DEAN SKELOS.......the long island senate delegation drops to 8 now.........DENNIS RIVERA (President of 1199/SEIU Health care workers)...let me add here...CSEA and PEF....for being on the wrong side of the fence on this one...and the state employees that will suffer at contract time because of their stupidity..note..these are my own comments........and my own pick as loser Maureen O'Connell for never really taking charge of her campaign and allowing all the embarassing nonsense to go on.........andy

Democrat unofficial winner in Long Island Senate race ..Albany Times Union....."Spitzer, a Democrat, made it clear early on that he considered the special election a referendum on his agenda to reform Albany. He had a hand in selecting Johnson, a Nassau County legislator, to be the Democratic candidate, appeared with him in a television ad and helped him raise money.
Douglas Muzzio, a Baruch College political science professor, said it appears "round one goes to Eliot."
``Clearly he put in all that effort staked to his early reputation and it looks like he's walking out a winner, particularly coming the day before they're going to name the comptroller,'' Muzzio said. ``At the end of the day, he's going to win one and lose one, but this is a big win.'' hey batting .500 is not so bad......

.Democrat Wins Senate Seat on Long Island........New York Times...."Though Mr. Balboni’s personal popularity gave him a comfortable margin in last November’s election, his Nassau County district has been trending Democratic. It now has 78,000 Democrats, 72,000 Republicans, 9,000 minor party members and 47,000 unaffiliated voters.
The vacancy posed a major challenge for Senator Bruno’s newly chosen state Republican Party chairman, Joseph Mondello. He is also Nassau’s longtime Republican Party chairman, and the Senate loss on his home turf was a serious setback" Funny...Mondello was no where to be seen last night....News12 wound up interviewing the conservative party chair......maybe Joe left to buy some florida property ???........andy
