Joseph SpectorStaff writer November 15, 2006 12:20 pm — Governor-elect Eliot Spitzer stopped in Rochester this morning as part of a tour of upstate cities, pledging that he will seek to jump-start the upstate economy.
Spitzer held private meetings with Rochester Mayor Robert Duffy, business leaders and Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks. Then he toured the Hickey Freeman plant on North Clinton Avenue.
He said the state needs to cut property taxes and change business laws that thwart economic growth, such as high workers' compensation rates."Everybody will have to get around a table and compromise," said Spitzer, a Democrat who won election as governor last week.
After touring the suit manufacturing plant, Spitzer bought a Hickey Freeman suit and said he will likely wear it at his inauguration. He was in Buffalo on Tuesday and was headed this afternoon to Syracuse.
