The New York State Bar Association has deemed all seven of the candidates for an opening on the state’s top court “well qualified” and sent its findings to Governor-elect Eliot Spitzer, who must make a decision by Jan. 15 to fill the vacancy left by Associate Judge Albert Rosenblatt, who reached the mandatory retirement age of 70 this year.
The ratings are made by the bar’s 21-member Committee to Review Judicial Nominations. The determination of “well qualified” is given to those who “possess pre-eminent qualifications, in the committee’s judgment,” according to the NYSBA press release.
The seven are:
Hon.
Richard T. Andrias, associate judge of the Appellate Division, First Department.
Hon.
Juanita Bing Newton, deputy chief administrative judge for Judicial Initiatives.
George F. Carpinello, Esq., partner in Boies Schiller & Flexner.
Hon.
Steven. W. Fisher, associate justice of the Appellate Division, Second Department.
Hon.
Theodore T. Jones Jr., administrative judge of the Supreme Court, civil term, Kings County.
Hon.
Thomas E. Mercure, associate justice of Appellate Division, Third Department.
Hon.
James A. Yates, justice of the Supreme Court, First Judicial District.
