DiNapoli: No Steamroller Here
New York Times Empire Zone
What you see here..is the Tom I have known for years...........andy
"In his first press conference, held seconds after being sworn in as the new state comptroller, Thomas S. DiNapoli struck a peaceable tone, though a noticably firm one at times.
Asked about Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s angry press conference earlier in the day — at which the guv attacked the Legislature for its “stunning lack of integrity” in picking Mr. DiNapoli — the new comptroller avoided any escalation.
“I wasn’t there, I don’t know how he said it,” said Mr. DiNapoli. “I’m the comptroller. I have an important responsibility, and I look forward to working with him in my new capacity.”
Later, he said “I have known Eliot Spitzer since he ran the first time for attorney general. I have never had anything but a pleasant and cordial and friendly conversation with him. That includes today.”
Mr. DiNapoli was sworn in while surrounded by numerous members of the Legislature, sparking the inevitable question about his future independence from them.
“There are times where I have to play the watchdog role, and my independence comes from the integrity of my beliefs, and I think the consistency with how I approach public service. I’m going to call the shots as I seem them. I don’t intend to be anyone’s lapdog. I intend to be a watchdog.”
His (now former) colleagues cheered." We all have something to cheer about now.............andy
