Special Election Madness

Liz Benjamin(Capitol Confidential) gives us Suozzi To The Rescue " Democratic 7th SD candidate Craig Johnson’s campaign released a statement this morning from Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi, who excoriates Johnson’s GOP opponent, Maureen O’Connell, for using a “fake government seal” and a photo of Osama bin Laden in a campaign mailer.
“If the O’Connell campaign actually sent out this literature it’s a clear sign they’re in trouble,” Suozzi said, “because it’s the most laughable piece of garbage I’ve ever seen.”
Johnson’s campaign manager Brian Stedge-Stroud has written to Nassau County DA Kathleen Rice to ask her to investigate O’Connell’s alleged “abuse of government insignia.”
“We cannot allow the illegal use of official insignia to become yet another dirty trick that political campaigns use to mislead voters,” Stedge-Stroud said in the press relase.
By my count, that brings the requested investigation tally in this race up to three. The GOP has asked Rice to look into whether Johnson “purchased” the Working Families Party line, and the Suffolk County WFP chairman has made the same request of the federal authorities.
Meanwhile, Newsday reported today that the Democrats have asked the U.S. Justice Department to send federal monitors for the Feb. 6 election, contending “there has been significant voter intimidation in previous elections within the 7th District.”
State GOP Chairman Joe Mondello told the paper he would “welcome” federal monitoring because it would prevent the other side from bringing voters from NYC into the district on Tuesday who are not eiligible to vote there.
The Democrats, of course, deny that they would ever do such a thing.
Meanwhile, former state Sen. Mike Balboni, the Republican who went to work for Gov. Eliot Spitzer as deputy secretary for public safety, thus touching off this whole special election mess, told Newsday he wasn’t aware of O’Connell’s mailing (which features a photo of him standing with her in front of that controversial seal).
“To the extent that it implies that there is a government agency supporting the candidacy of anybody, that is incorrect and inappropriate,” Balboni said." The republicans are in deep trouble right now......having to resort to Bush type "fear mongering" to grab a few votes....what IQ Level do they think the long island voter has??? and yes..word on the street has the local republican foot soldiers...trying to disrupt the election by intimidation and handing out false information at the polling booths....the dems are organizing the largest "swat" team of election attorneys/poll watchers etc ever organized in Nassau county history...every single voting district will be watched....and any attempt to challenge or disrupt will be met with an instant dem response........something the republicans are not used to....welcome to "Day One" gentlemen........andy
