Catching a glimpse of history About 2,500 people line up at the Capitol to see Lincoln's draft of the Emancipation Proclamation

Gov. Eliot Spitzer put the state-owned draft on display Sunday as part of a broader push to invite ordinary citizens into the halls and rooms of the Capitol, spaces that have been closed to the public for years.
"This building belongs to the people of New York," said Spitzer spokesman Marc Violette.
New Yorkers took Spitzer up on the offer in droves. The crowd of waiting proclamation-peepers was so large it resembled a line at Disney World. The doors opened before noon and closed at 4 p.m., but people still remained lined up inside waiting at 7 p.m. for the rest....
